Weekly Crush: Caitlin Higgason

This week’s DBMH crush is Caitlin Higgason! Caitlin is a California wedding and elopement photographer. She has a beautiful way of capturing love in its purest form. Caitlin focuses on showcasing the love that her couples have for one another through the use of prompts, which she feels truly allows her couples to be themselves. Take a look at what Caitlin has to say about her business, her art, and her goals.

Hey Caitlin, where are you sitting as you are writing this right now? How’s your day going? How are you feeling?

Right now I am sitting in my apartment at the dining table/desk sipping on an Acai smoothie! Fun fact: my boyfriend and I actually made the table by purchasing a slab of wood, wood stain and some hairpin legs on Esty. Super easy and cute! Anyways, my day is going great now that I found out I’m being featured on Dirty Boots! Plus I just sent off a few galleries, so I’m feeling pretty accomplished.

To those that might not know you just yet, please introduce yourself – Who are you? Cat or dog person? What’s your photography style?

Hiiii! My name is Caitlin from Cait & Co. Photo, and I’m a 25 year old wedding & elopement photographer based out of Orange County, CA! I was born and raised in Dallas, TX and I moved to the West coast about 2.5 years ago. I’m definitely a dog person. This summer my boyfriend surprised me with a golden retriever puppy!! Her name is Magnolia, but we like to call her Nugget, haha! She’s pretty much the cutest thing ever! I would say my photography style is very documentary. I love to set up prompts for my couples, so it’s not like they’re really posing for me. I try to capture the real and authentic moments between them.

Can you show us 1 or 2 photographs that are particularly meaningful to you and share the story behind them?

This was definitely one of my favorite sessions to date! Yosemite holds a special place in this Texas couple’s hearts. This was their 3rd time visiting Yosemite together. The first time they went they were just friends, the second time they were dating and the third time (this time) they were finally engaged! I was so excited when they asked me to shoot their engagement photos in a place that means so much to them! Not to mention, the bride is a friend of mine from back home who has helped inspire my passion for photography. After admiring her work for years, it meant so much to me that she wanted ME to do her engagement photos!

What role does Instagram play for you as a photographer? Is it important for your business?

Instagram is definitely the most important tool in marketing my business! I would say about 80% of my business comes from instagram. The other 20% from Facebook, Google and referrals. That’s why it’s so important for me to be present on the app (even though its rather time consuming)!  It’s also pretty cool that Instagram is free. I don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars a month advertising myself to gain more clients! Just a simple hashtag like #OrangeCountyWeddingPhotographer will do.

If you had to pick just one thing, what would you say you love the most about being a wedding photographer?

It’s so hard to pick just one thing! But the top of my list is definitely the feeling of making people happy with something I love doing. It’s seriously the best feeling ever when I deliver an album and the couple responds with something like, “OMG WE’RE BOTH IN TEARS!!! You captured our day better than we could have ever imagined!!!!” It’s amazing, and I love all my clients who trust me on one of the biggest days of their lives. It’s an even better feeling when your clients become your friends!

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced that could be a helpful lesson for other photographers?

This one’s easy: knowing your worth and not letting anyone undervalue you. I’ve found that giving discounts and lowering your prices just to book a wedding that seems like it will be “instagram worthy” isn’t always a good thing. If you undervalue yourself, so will your client, which can lead to a lot of stress and heartache. It’s definitely not worth it!

Who or what inspires you?

There are so many things that inspire me, but above all else I would say traveling to new places! I feel like moving from Texas to California has opened a ton of new doors for me. There are SO many places to explore here, it’s a little unreal. Then, not too far away you have Arizona, Oregon… Hawaii! I can’t wait to continue exploring the world, and capturing love in the most beautiful places!

What are your dreams for the future of your career?

I would love to continue this photography journey for as long as I can. Hopefully I’ll get to fulfill shooting in some of the locations on my bucket list like Thailand, Greece and Ireland! I’d also love to explore some of my other hobbies! I really enjoy interior decorating (just like my mom- she’s an interior designer)! I think it would be a lot of fun to help flip houses, and then pick out the decor for them. I guess we’ll just have to see where the future takes me!

Thank you so much to Caitlin for being this week’s photographer crush!
